I am so behind in posting!  This little fellow is safe and sound in his tree house.  I don't know if he's ready to fly...it's a big world out there.  Anyway, slowly getting back into painting.

Sunday Morning

Nothing like painting an arbutus to put me in a positive frame of mind!  Plus, I mixed up some beautiful acrylic colours for my paint box...like getting a whole new set of crayons to colour with.

Ray of Sunshine

I've been away moving my mom from Saskatoon to BC, so I have a bit of catching up to do.

This spring we had three Goldfinches flitting across the yard to use the bird bath.  Bright notes of colour.  A real pleasure to watch.

Into The Light

I've been in Saskatoon so I'm a tad behind in posting.  I really like painting swans...you can sink so many soft colours into the shadows.

In the Pink

Still hopeful that spring is just around the corner.  The crocuses are blooming, the forsythia is getting ready, but it is still wet, windy and on the cool side.  Promises for sunshine and warmer weather next week, so maybe we'll see this little guy in a tree...somewhere, maybe.

Wildflowers

Back in Arbutus Land...this is a cheery little arbutus painting with wildflowers.  We have an abundance of wildflowers in the summer, although on close inspection they might be mistaken as dandelions and weeds.  Ever the optimist....

Spring Has Sprung

This is another happy little back alley scene.  I say 'happy' because that's what colour does for me.  When I dream the scary dreams are always in black and white.....happy dreams are in colour.  Just set me loose with a box of crayons and I will colour your world :}

Young Love

There were definite signs of spring....walking through Davis Bay and my garden, snowdrops were poking their little heads out.  Sigh...now we have six inches of February snow.  Oh, well, I painted something with Valentine's Day in mind, and hopefully the snow will be gone in a few days and we'll be back to that lovely rain.  I hope my snowdrop hasn't been squashed.  There's one that pops its little head up in January, the rest follow suit in February.  Huh.  Snow...

Weight of Snow

I can remember scenes like this when I lived in Saskatoon and Edmonton.  The weight of the snow pushing the branches down...running outside to shake the snow off the bushes, and getting awfully wet in the process.

This is from a photo I took one wintery day in Porpoise Bay Provincial Park.  It was a fairly complex painting, but I really enjoyed the challenge, and I'm pleased with the result.

Crisp Morning

Birds notwithstanding, I have painted the odd winter scene.  I find it difficult to wrap my brain around a large scene, but smaller paintings seem to be manageable in 20 or 30 minute increments.  This is an arbutus on a crisp, chilly morning.

Winter Red

Another little chickadee painting for our Christmas Show at the gallery.  I've actually started a couple of larger landscapes, but time to sit and paint large pieces isn't happening right now.  So, chirpy little birds it is.

Celebration

I've always loved colouring poinsettias.  Every Christmas mom would give us a Christmas colouring book.  Lots of holly, snowmen, angels and poinsettias.  Poinsettias were the best.  Guess I still get to colour them.

Early Snow

I was in Saskatoon this fall, and we had an early, surprise snow.  It didn't last that long but I grabbed my cell and took some pictures of back lanes.  We don't get snow that often on the Sunshine Coast, so I (almost) welcomed the chance to walk through the slushy snow :}  Almost...

Rocky Cove

I was happy with the outcome of this painting, especially since I've been rather slow getting back to the easel.  It's always nice having something new hanging in the gallery.

Gone Fishing

It has been a while since I've been at my easel.  Finally managed to finish this scene from a photo I took in Pender Harbour some time ago (well, a few years ago).  Felt more comfortable doing this painting in oil. I was happy with the end result.  I've done the block-in on several other paintings and looking forward to spending a lot of time at my easel this fall and winter.  Where on earth does the time go?

Full Bloom

This has been hanging around the studio for some time.  It just needed a little work to complete, so I finally dragged out my oils and finished it.  I put it in a black drop-in frame which provides a nice contrast to the colourful roses.

Dappled Shade

This is a photo I took last October from Porpoise Bay creek looking outwards.  Lots of good views in the Provincial Park.  The thing that caught my eye was the small blue pond reflecting the overhanging leaves, and just a bit of the sky.  I also liked the dappled shade on the gravel bed.

Boat House

Sometimes you stand at your easel and the painting just seems to paint itself.  Everything just flows from the brush to the canvas.  This was not one of those paintings, but I was pleased with the end result anyway.  I took the photo in the summer on the beach in Roberts Creek.  I liked the shadow thrown on the boat house...the yellow canoe caught my eye, as did the colourful windsock, and the little yellow weathervane on the roof.

Endless Summer

This is a cheery little scene you might find anywhere along our coast.  Foxgloves, dandelions, arbutus...and lots of water, of course.  SOLD

This is 24x8" format I normally use for my hummingbird scenes, but the arbutus seems to fit right in.

Evening Song

This is another 9x12" landscape with subdued evening colour.  Everything's so pretty in the early evening when you have that soft pink light.  And there's almost a hush in the air.  Well, it felt like that to me.   I went a bit poetic with the titles of these last two paintings, but, what the heck...SOLD

Silent Forest

This is another of the Haida Gwaii totems.  I like the way the dappled sunlight shines on the totem.   I wonder how many people have passed this way?   If only the forest could speak.

Autumn Two Step (2)

This is the other half of the diptych.  Together they make a nice set, I think.  I took the picture many years ago near Stony Plain, Alberta.  It was a warm autumn day, and when I took the photo I figured some day it would make a painting...or in this case, two.

This is the first of a diptych that I painted as a wedding gift for my daughter and new son-in-law, Rob.  It's a happy painting for a very happy occasion!

Among the Zinnias

You can never have too many hummingbirds.  They're zapping around like crazy outside.  I figure once in a while they need to take a break, too.

Afternoon Delight

Still enjoying painting hummingbirds in the garden.   I haven't seen any yet this spring, but I know they'll be here in no time.  Meanwhile, lots of robins in the garden.

Springside

I've been away from my easel for a while, and I'm relying on some old favourites to get me back in the groove...namely, arbutus and hummingbirds (though not in the same painting).

Summer Creek

Back to work on a few BC landscapes.  We had almost two weeks of lovely, sunny weather but now we're back to wild, woolly and wet.  It gets dark very early these days.  Glad I took a lot of photos so I can make good use of some down time.

This is another little 9x12 bird painting.  Chickadees have such personalities bobbing around everywhere.  Fun to watch and fun to paint.

Big Blue Bucket

I'm rather behind with my posting and my painting, but will catch up now that summer is behind us and we're facing the rainy November season.  Mind you, for the 1st of November, it's a glorious day out.  This is a photo I took of a young girl at Katherine Lake.  Lots of paintings to come from just one lovely day at Katherine Lake.

Guardians

A good friend of mine went to Haida Gwaii this summer and took a ton of photos for me.  I'm looking forward to making that trip myself one day.  You talk about an area steeped in culture...well, this is it!

One Summer

Here is another painting of Secret Beach, only looking away from the beach.  I loved the cast shadows on the driftwood and the way the sunlight lit up part of the meadow.  It was a pleasure to paint.  This is for our next show at the end of the month.  This is a 30x30" and I really enjoyed the larger format.  I took a lot of photos this particular summer day, and I'm looking forward to painting all winter long.

Last Call

One of my paintings, Last Call, was featured in the book of lecture transcripts of Her Highness Princess Takamado held at the Osaka University of Arts, Japan.  Consul of Canada, Mr. Matthew Fraser was invited to lecture about Canada and its culture.  Of course, the entire book is in Japanese, but the pictures are pretty.  SOLD

Summer Cottage

Summer time, and BC is the place.  This is a cottage overlooking Georgia Strait, in Roberts Creek on the beautiful Sunshine Coast.  Hope I've captured the warmth of the day.  SOLD

Colourful Canopy

This is a 24x36 acrylic on stretched canvas.  I took the picture on one of those glorious autumn days when some of the leaves are turning colour.  I thought the blue boats set them off nicely.  SOLD

Dance

Arbutus trees have their own contorted beauty.  This one is doing a dance in celebration of spring.

Beach Bum

I'm busy painting the studio, so not much time for any other painting.  I finished this little guy for the new show.  We had some nice wave action at Davis Bay when I took this photo - just right for a boogie board.  This young boy was making the most of the water.  Bit of a cheeky lad. SOLD

Casablanca White

I have these amazing Casablanca lilies in the perennial border, and I've always wanted to paint them.  I enjoyed playing with the shadow colours, and loved the way the petals curl on the flowers.  These were actually quite challenging, particularly since most of the large canvas is white, but think it came together quite nicely.  Wish I could have captured their amazing scent!

The Zen of Waterlilies

 

This is another spot at Katherine Lake, just a bit beyond the place where I did the previous painting.  The water lilies and the reflection in the water caught my eye, and all those lovely brambles in the water.  A warm, sunny day.  I can almost hear the insects humming.

Perfection of the Morning

This was an absolutely lovely day we spent at Katherine Lake last summer.  This is a little offshoot pond with grasses, reed, water lilies and even a few resident turtles, although I didn't see any when I took my photos.  Still, good memories, and lots of good photos to translate into paintings.
