The Zen of Waterlilies

 

This is another spot at Katherine Lake, just a bit beyond the place where I did the previous painting.  The water lilies and the reflection in the water caught my eye, and all those lovely brambles in the water.  A warm, sunny day.  I can almost hear the insects humming.

Perfection of the Morning

This was an absolutely lovely day we spent at Katherine Lake last summer.  This is a little offshoot pond with grasses, reed, water lilies and even a few resident turtles, although I didn't see any when I took my photos.  Still, good memories, and lots of good photos to translate into paintings.

Hummingbird Diptych

And just for the heck of it, this is what the hummingbird diptych looks like.  I would love to see some flowers and hummingbirds...I think we've had our share of rain this February.  I know spring is just around the corner, but apparently there's a few puddles to work through, first.  SOLD

At Rest



When I need a break from larger paintings that take a little more concentration, I have fun with daisies or hummingbirds.  This is actually a diptych, which matches with the 'Yellow Snappers' painting I did a short while ago.

Secret Afternoon

I never get tired of painting Secret Beach.  There are so many different angles and views.  It's such a lovely, secluded beach usually only frequented by locals (and we're not talking!).  I still seem to be having problems with my camera and colour.  This might be one of those times when I actually need to read the instructions.

Back to painting things I love...hummingbirds and flowers.  I'm still struggling a bit with my new camera because the colours are a bit too blue, but I'll figure it out.  These are a nice break from the larger, more intense landscapes.  I hope you enjoy looking at them because I do enjoy painting them.

Forest Green

I took this picture of Angus creek in the summer, in one of our provincial parks.  There was a green glow all around.  Lots of moss hanging down from the trees.  It was very magical.

We've had a lot of problems with raccoons over the past year, so I'm not especially fond of them.  But, this little guy is awfully cute, so I may change my mind.

Winter Berries

This little chickadee is for our Christmas Show.  Nothing says Christmas like red berries.  Well, that's not true...a lot of things signify Christmas, but I liked the chickadee and I liked the berries.

Everything Has Its Own Beauty

Happy Daze

First of the Season

Daisies have to be my favourite flowers to paint.  They don't make demands like roses do, no thorns to sting you, and they're just plain cheerful!  And who doesn't love strawberries?  SOLD

Hummer Resting

The hummingbirds are back in full force.  This is just a perky little painting showing one at rest.  I took a photo of a hummingbird hovering by the red tulips on the sundeck yesterday.  Well, by the time I got my camera it was gone, of course, but I got a picture of the tulips and the light, so will keep that idea for later.  SOLD

Best Seat In The House

This spring the municipality planted a number of flowering dogwoods as a beautification program.  Lucky us, we now have one in our front yard.  This little fellow has the best seat in the house.

Sticks and Stones

I have been somewhat remiss with uploading my files.  I see further changes have been made to the blog.  Sigh, I do wish they'd leave things alone once I've figured them out.  Anyway, this is for our 5 Mile Challenge at the gallery.  This was a picture I took of Chapman Creek, and I quite liked the way it turned out.  This is a 20x20" canvas, which was a nice size to work on.  I really will be more diligent and post my new paintings.

I've been working on a number of large paintings for the 2013 season.  I am toying with buying a bunch of 5x7 and 6x8 canvasboards and doing more of the almost daily paintings.  I'll seriously put this on my list of New Year's Resolutions.  I've rather missed the small paintings.  The struggle was coming up with new subjects, so this time I may focus on something like still life or floral.

Something to think about.  Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, and prosperous new year.

Celebration Red

Poinsettia season is coming up.  I know they come in a variety of colours, but red is still my favorite.  This painting is 8x24.   I quite enjoy the challenge of painting on odd sizes of canvas.  SOLD

I really enjoy painting water. Each province has its own beauty.  You can never go to far in British Columbia before you stumble on a perfect scene like this one. SOLD

Finally finished this dahlia painting.  I used my favorite Oriental vase - I've used it a number of times in paintings.  And the fact that I paid $5.00 at a sidewalk sale, makes it even better!

After the Rain

I've always wanted to paint Molly's Reach, and this was for a challenge at the gallery.  Not a lot of light because it was a rainy day.  This took a while, and I had fun with the windows which show reflections of the diners.  Next time I'll paint Molly's from a distance.  SOLD

Sunspots

Had a great time visiting my parents in Saskatoon.  Now it's time to get some painting in.  Been a busy summer so far.  Lots of fun things to do, not the least of which is taking back control of my garden.  It's gotten totally out of hand with overgrown perennials, chickweed, and clover.  We've had some lovely, sunny weather and everything is growing like gangbusters.  I understand better what indeterminate tomatoes are, as mine are close to 6' tall,  I wish my sunflowers were as nice! SOLD

Shadow Play

These terracotta pots were fun to paint.  The shadows are a bit deeper in the painting.  I couldn't quite match the colour in my program, but you get the idea.  It reminds me of a hot summer day, with a bit of green relief. SOLD

Songbird Special

I took this photo in a friend's yard last year, and had great fun painting it.  I love bright, happy colours.  Reminds me of summer.  I'm still waiting for spring!

Red, White and Blue

The seeds I planted last week are breaking through the soil, but spring and summer seem a long way off, yet. It's still cool in the Pacific Northwest.  Figured painting a few flowers would brighten the day.  Worked for me :} SOLD

Spring Rush

I find moving water quite exciting to paint.  Rocks, too, for that matter.  You can actually work a lot of colour into water, particularly the shady areas.  

Took a photo of this little girl on Davis Bay beach.  Davis Bay has the nicest beach around - actual sand instead of rocks.  This little girl had her eye fixed on this big old seagull heading her way.  Always a lot of activity there, and lots of good poses to capture.  SOLD

Perched

I really enjoy painting birds.  Wrens are such cocky little guys.  After a cold, wet winter, it's nice to hear the birds chirping outside.  Maybe, just maybe, we've got Spring.  SOLD

Tranquil Afternoon

This is a really neat old wooden boat I took a picture of in Gibsons Harbour.  I thought it would be interesting to paint on an old bumpy canvas...what I didn't realize is that boats have lots of straight lines, and straight lines don't work really well on a bumpy surface.  Anyway, it was fun and just a little challenging.   Love the red and green...the little yellow sailboat and the blue bumper don't hurt, either.  Bright and cheery, just the way I like them.  SOLD

Ferncliff Illusion

Landscapes are fun, and heaven knows we have enough beauty in B.C. to choose from.  But, during the rainy season and with dreary winter edging into spring, my first love is still painting flowers.  I have a nice selection of dahlias in the garden that friends have shared with me, or that I got at Dahlias Galore, which is an amazing place to visit during dahlia season.  I've taken a ton of pictures of their flowers....rows and rows of glorious dahlias.  This year I must sneak another plant or two into my garden. Sunny Afternoon

As a kid I loved horses.  Still do.  I remember taking the bus from one end of Saskatoon to the other, just to get to a stable.  It took a long time, but the horses were worth it.  This picture was taken near Abbotsford, on a warm, sunny afternoon. SOLD
